Affordable tropical places to visit

The days are getting cooler, making us all aware that winter is just a few short months away. With snow practically on the horizon, who wouldn't dream of a nice, tropical vacation once in a while? Luckily, you can turn those dreams into reality with these affordable destinations:

Playa del Carmen, Mexico
Want the experience of Cancun without the people? Head to Playa del Carmen instead and go snorkeling in the cenotes - natural freshwater swimming pools found in underground caves. Rent a bike and visit the city end to end to experience local life and find the best places to eat. You're in luck if you enjoy Mexican cuisine since the food here is cheap, delicious and authentic. Also, just because Playa del Carmen isn't Cancun doesn't mean it lacks a thriving nightlife scene. Feel free to pack your best outfit and psyche yourself up for a fun night.

Ocho Rios,  Jamaica
Most Jamaican tourists fly directly to Montego Bay and never leave, but if you're willing to take a little trip, you'll hit Ocho Rios. Considered by some to be the island's best-kept secret, this coastal town has no shortage of things to do. Go for a swim while riding a horse, take a safari ride or simply relax with the locals and enjoy cheap beer and jerk chicken. Plus, with the money you save on airfare and lodging, you won't feel guilty treating yourself to some luxury accessories at one of the city's many boutiques.

Bocas del Toro, Panama
Panama is a cheaper destination that Costa Rica, and although Bocas del Toro has its fair share of luxury hotels, you can find some cheap rooms, too. Plus, this beach town is small enough to cover on foot, so you won't have to worry about paying for a taxi. Bring a camera along and take snapshots of the area's brightly-colored flora and fauna, or just enjoy a lazy afternoon nap. If you look up before dozing off, you might see a sloth doing the exact same thing.

Cartagena,  Columbia
This port city has a rich history and a lot of culture. Absorb the colonial architecture on a horse-and-carriage tour or pretend you're one of the many pirates of the city's past. Make sure to throw a copy of "Love in the Time of Cholera" in your suitcase - Cartagena inspired much of author Gabriel Garcia Marquez's work.
